. thanks very much. >>> hundreds of thousands of homes torn apart by superstorm sandy. as people start to rebuild, are insurance companies trying to help? or are they just trying to help themselves? >>> the price tag for superstorm sandy is growing. officials in new york state and new jersey say they'll need more than $70 billion to recover. in some ways the property devastation was worse than hurricanes katrina and rita combined. in some ways. in new york state alone sandy destroyed more than 300,000 homes. that's a lot of homes that have to be rebuilt. and as cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick discovered, it means a lot of homeowners are looking for answers. >> reporter: when superstorm sandy hit, peggy thought she was ready. she paid decades worth of insurance premiums to be covered for catastrophe. so this is the letter basically denying -- >> i went to the office and this is what they gave me. >> reporter: she says her claim was denied. her deluxe homeowners policy covered hurricane and wind, not floods. >> she said you're not entitled to anything. you don't have flood

month after hurricane sandy, there's an astounding new price tag on the storm. new york governor andrew cuomo estimates repairs for the state and new york city will top $32 billion. another $9 billion may be needed to prevent damage from future storms. cuomo says sandy affected many more people and places than did hurricane katrina. >>> next door in new jersey, which suffered $30 billion in losses, governor chris christie, just announce thad he's running for re-election. christie's won praise and new found popularity with his handling of hurricane sandy. he says he is going to seek another term next year. so he can continue leading the state through the long recovery. and he, won back in 2009 by 86,000 votes. so far no democratic challenger has put their name in the hat, but we're hearing rumbles of potentially newark mayor cory booker. >>> another popular politician who has kind of gained some voice on the national stage. should be interesting. i wonder how two things will impact him in terms of his standing within the gop. number one, of course, the famous scene of christie and the pr
the devastation unleashed on his state by superstorm sandy and says the long recovery home has convinced him to run for re-election next year. storm victims have been asking about his plans. >> this weekend, mary pat and i, the kids, had an opportunity to just kind of have a few minutes to ourselves. and we talked about it. and we've decided we're going to seek re-election. and we're wanting to get that going today. so i instructed my campaign treasurer to file papers with the election law enforcement commission to seek re-election. and so -- >> there you have it. christie has been extremely hands on in dealing with the storm damage. that has helped fuel a huge spike in his approval ratings which now hover around 80%. >>> in dewitt county, illinois, reluctantly agreed to a coin flip 14 days after their election ended in a tie. incumbent ferguson called tails. decisive coin flip was more like gambling than democracy, he says. >>> crane on fire starts to collapse with hundreds of people standing below in australia. now we're learning about a connection between that crane and another crane that

financial cost of hurricane sandy is coming into focus. new york has requested $42 billion in aid and new jersey officials estimate they suffered at least $29 billion in losses, bringing the total of $71 billion in the two hardest hit states. sandy was in some ways worse than hurricane katrina, citing the high economic cost and property destruction. meanwhile, a top executive and a trustee for the power company have resigned in the wake of the company's slow response in getting power back to new yorkers on long island. >>> here's a look at some of the other stories topping the news right now. a fast-moving storm system sweeping through the mid-atlantic this morning bringing a wet mixture of rain and snow. the storm is expected to put down 1 to 3 inches of snow from west virginia to new york. >>> early numbers suggest that cyber monday raked in big numbers. according to ibm, online sales jumped 30% over last year, sales on ebay and amazon.com were very strong. >>> kevin clash is now being accused of a third sexual relationship with an underage boy. the latest accuser claims he was 16 when

hard by superstorm sandy are struggling to open their doors for black friday. one brooklyn toys r us, get this, actually operating out of a big tent. many folks, though, not just bargain hunting for gifts, they're also stocking up on essentials. and rick leventhal is live in brooklyn. what's it like there at that location? >> reporter: you know, gregg, we've seen the craziness on black friday in so many stores and so many places. not here in brooklyn, not today on this black friday. in large part because, as you mentioned, this toys r us flooded -- that's the tent they built out front. the store behind it normally holds 1100 people. they can only fit about 200 inside that tent. you see the babies r us, the kohls next door also shut down. the flood ruined everything, so wednesday they opened this tent. we can show you that they did bring in new toys, they have lined the shelves in this much smaller space, and people were lined up to get inside overnight, but today it's pretty quiet. no lines to speak of at all. and the store is just hoping to make back some of what it's been losing ov
